Zambales

Zanzibar hotel on Bario Barreto Beach.

How to get there : From Manila or Angeles you can get a bus, private car or a van to Olongapo and Subic. From here though you need to find a bus service going north along the coast and explore the many beaches.

Ideally you can base yourself around the Subic Bay area and them bus or van upto the various beaches north bound along the coastal road. There are many hotels and restaurants as well in the Subic area.

Surfing

Zambales Province is located on the western coast of Luzon and has yet to attract the attention many of the other surfing locations in the Philippines has. There are a close knit bunch of local surfers there, though more than friendly to outsiders. The waves are often powerful, but with many locations in the Philippines, inconsistent in size and quality.

The coast road is a pleasant alternative when traveling either north of south and you might discover a few breaks of your own on that route given the right conditions. The surf here is generally relies on a typhoon to get things working from July through to late October. From November through to March you are waiting for a decent low pressure system up north. The waves can get quite big, 8-10ft plus, and many of the breaks require caution if you are a beginner. Ask a local before paddling out.
