Angeles City

Introduction

Angeles City has risen like a phoenix from the ashes - quite literally. Angeles was best known as a base for the U.S. Air Force up until the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. The decision was then made to withdraw from Clark Air Base and Angeles was left as a ghost town in the ashes. About the same time over in Manila, Mayor Lim's clean up campaign swept through the thriving nightlife scene of Ermita. Several bars took the brave decision the to relocate to Angeles.

The rest as they say is history.... The City started to rise from the ashes and became the center of nightlife in the Philippines. The Ex-patriate community has grown and grown and many former service men have revisited the area over the last 10 years. New visitors have discovered Angeles as a place to come for a Adult themed vacation. A TSM heaven has now long been established. Well over 60 bars and many more establishments where a single gentleman can enjoy the vacation of a lifetime.

How to Get there.

Angeles City is in North Luzon approximately 2 hours drive north of Manila on the Northern Expressway. The trip can also now be done by air via SeAir as they run a service to and from Manila daily. There are however, no trains as the county does not have a national rail network. Public Bus services are also available from Manila, and also there is Swagman Travel's Fly the Bus service.

Private Car Hire

Hotels in Angeles can supply private car hire and usually at a cost of around P1800. A car or a van can be booked via Margarita Station for around the same price see their web-site

Beeline travel has cars available at P1600 and have drivers available in both Angeles and Manila which means we can do bookings at short notice in Manila. We also have vans available at P1900. Cold drinks are available on request. Another advantage with Beeline is that they have two full time Airport representatives at the Airport who meet passengers upstairs at the Arrivals hall and not downstairs at the arrivals hall extension area. see the Beeline travel Airport page.

Nissan Cars at the Airport are also a safe and reliable service, you will see their stand at the airport as you leave the Arrival hall on the right hand side of the drive through. Cost again is around P1800.

Private Taxi's in Manila can also be flagged down and a price negotiated usually you can get a good deal of P1500 or less. But! many of these drivers may not know how to get to Angeles, or know Angeles when they get there, so be advised and book a private car in advance.

Swagman Travel do a regular bus service from the Airport and The Swagman Hotel in Ermita. They do a regular shuttle service from the Airport to the hotel by request (email: fly-bus@mozcom.com) Swagman Fly the Bus runs three times daily run to Angeles. From the Airport the cost is P400. Public Bus Services

GETTING TO BALIBAGO, ANGELES CITY: by Kabayo

Exit the airport customs/arrival hall into the lobby.

If the hour is not too late, say 6:00 AM until 7:00 PM, look for the escalator to the arrival level (upstairs), or go outside and look for the stairs to the upper level.

Look for the city taxis dropping off passengers. Observe things for a few minutes. You will notice some people jumping into the taxis as soon as the passengers are dropped off. This is what you must do, but it's not as simple as jumping in. First, you must make sure that the driver will use his meter, and not insist on a flat rate (which will always be higher than a metered rate). Just say "Meter?" If you need to repeat, ask "Do you have a meter? Is it working? Are you going to use it?" He may ask you where you are going. You say "Victory Liner in Pasay City" (pronounced PA-sigh). It should be P40 - P60 for this taxi fare, depending upon traffic conditions.

Once you get to the Victory Liner terminal, walk around and observe that there are two or three different ticket windows. You want the one where they sell tickets for the 'Dagupan Aircon Bus' (daag-oo-paan) Just say "Dau" (da-oo) to the ticket seller. The ticket will be marked for KM100, and will cost about P70 or P80. The ticket will be marked with a seat number. If the bus is already there, you may board and get comfortable. If you have luggage, the conductor will stow it under the bus. Carry-ons can be taken on board. If you stow your luggage, keep an eye on things every time the luggage compartment is opened, to make sure that your luggage is not removed while someone else's luggage is being put on. The ride will be about two hours, longer if the traffic is bad.

Once you get to Dau, the bus will stop at the Mabalacat Bus Terminal. Get out, collect your luggage, and you can find a trike (if you have luggage) near the front of the terminal, or walk over to MacArthur Hiway and get a jeep (if you only have a carry on). If this is your first time, get a trike, because the driver will know where your hotel is.

Trikes: The trike drivers are a rough lot, and will do their utmost to separate you from your money. Always agree on the price before boarding. The going rate from the Bus Terminal to hotels on lower Fields Ave (Tropicana, Orchid, Chicago Park, Anchorage, or Woodland Park in Dau) is P40. Expect to pay as much as P50 if this is your first time dealing with these guys. Hotels like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Sunset Garden, Clarkton, Oasis, etc. will cost P50-P60, bit you may pay as much as P80 your first time. Make sure your driver really knows your hotel, by name, before hiring him.

Jeepneys: Walk out to the Dau Expressway (the road the terminal is located on), turn left, and walk to the intersection. This is MacArthur Hiway, the old road between Manila and Baguio. Cross the road and start looking at the jeeps' signboards (little placards inside the passenger side of the windshields). You want 'Main Gate'. Those jeeps are small and silver/grey.

When you see one, flag him down and climb in the passenger seat (if it's open) or in the back. There is room for eight people back there. Don't be shy, it's normal to be pressed up against the other passengers. The fare is P3. Just hand it to a passenger closer to the driver if you can't reach. To get attention when you want to pay, say "Bayad" (buy-ad) in a voice the driver can hear.

You can ride this jeep to the end of the line (5 to 10 minutes), (unless you're going to Woodland Park - look for Woodland's red and white sign on the left, near the big archway over the Hiway. Call out "Para" and knock on the ceiling to stop the jeep when you see Woodland's sign. It's a two block walk straight down the road from the sign to the gate of the Woodland Park compound). You should be able to see Margarita Station from the Main Gate drop off point, to your south a bit.

All of the lower Fields Avenue hotels are walking distance from Margarita Station. Just ask another foreigner for directions to your hotel. There will be lots of foreigners all around once you get this far. If you are going to Phoenix, Clarkton, Oasis, etc, you need another jeep. Ask someone near Margarita Station to point you toward the Friendship Jeep Terminal. It's not a big terminal, but it's where dozens of jeeps line up for a full load of passengers headed towards Friendship district. You will have to tell the driver the name of your hotel, unless you know where to get off. The fare is P3. All of the hotels will be on the left, and it won't hurt to watch for your hotel, in case the driver forgets! When you want him to stop, call out "para' (par-a), and knock your knuckle on the ceiling for good measure.

Options:

If you arrive too late to get a city taxi: You can get an airport taxi on the arrival level. Expect to pay P100 to P150 to Victory Liner. Last bus to Dagupan is around 10:00PM. Don't try to use Victory Liner if you're leaving the airport after 9:00 PM.

If you arrive too late to use Victory Liner: You can hire a taxi all the way to Angeles City. You must be a good negotiator. I have paid as little as P700, and as much as P1,500. I paid P1,400 in August, 1999. Good luck!

If you want to eliminate the taxi driver altogether: Exit the airport on the lower level. Turn right and keep walking until you reach the public road which runs by the side of the airport. There will be buses passing here. Look for a signboard which says 'Cubao' or 'Crossing' or 'Ayala' or "SM' or 'Megamall'. Any of these will pass the Victory Liner terminal in Pasay. Tell the conductor where you are going, and ask to be let off at the nearest pedestrian overpass (there is construction going on and you will need to use the overpass). The fare will be about P10!

If you have only a carry on and want to save time (5:00 AM to 8:00 PM only): Use the city bus or a taxi to get to the LRT terminal on EDSA in Pasay City. This is a very well known place. The LRT is an elevated train that runs from Baclaran (not a place for first timers) to Monumento district in Kalookan City. The fare is P10 (changing to a distance-based fare in December, 1999). You board the train bound for Monumento and ride to the end of the line. It's about a 20 minute ride from EDSA. The last trip of the day leaves Baclaran at 9:00 PM. No suitcases or large packages or food or drink are allowed. When you get off, ask anyone where the Victory Liner terminal is. It's beneath and behind a new shopping mall which is still under construction. Once again, you go to the Dagupan Aircon window and purchase a ticket to Dau. The fare is the same as from Pasay, but I've made this trip in 70 minutes. Even in traffic, it's usually no more than 90 minutes from here.

*The prices quoted were right Nov 1999 - and will have risen slightly since then

Seair Flights to Clark & Chartered Flights.

There are now flights daily to and from Clark Air Base. The one way cost is approximately P1850 which is cheap enough. However, there are only one flight a day, most days, and you have to get to another terminal in Manila for those flights. This can take you 30 minutes or more by taxi with the traffic. Once at Clark you will need another taxi to get to your hotel. Although the flight time is a little over 30 minutes you can still take in all, around 2 hours to get there. So what you save in comfort and time is negotiable, and you need to get from the Private terminals to the International terminal and vica-versa

For full details and flight times/bookings mailbeeline travel.

This is the same if you charter a private flight to Manila or Angeles with Jimmy Boyd through Beeline at US$110 for up to three passengers. (Light luggage only) From Angeles Jimmy will pick you up at your hotel and take you through to Clark and fly you to Manila - I did this once and it was awesome, and quick. But! As I said with Se-Air once you get there the trip to the International terminal can take longer than the flight! - Bookings can be done as I said via Beeline, and Jimmy Boyd also does scenic flights over Mount Pinatubo (US$110 1 hour tour for up to 3 people) and other destinations -  get a quote from Beeline.

Where to Stay

There are over 40 hotels in Angeles. Not all of which are as high a standard as you might expect 'back home.' The best hotel in Angeles is probably the Holiday Inn on Clark base. However it's location is a big disadvantage to many as transportation back and forth to Fields Ave is not easy.

The hotels are of an acceptable level in most cases, and beeline travel specializes in recommended hotels offering the best quality and service available in the different price ranges. The hotels have all been contracted to Beeline and come from recommendations from their clients themselves.

The Oasis hotel - Outside of the Holiday Inn this has to be about the best hotel in Angeles. The rooms, especially the Jr Suites are outstanding and the preferred rooms of Mr TSM and many Beeline travel clients. King sized beds, with a decent sized bathroom, with bath tub, and a living room area with tea and coffee making facilities. A good sized swimming pool and a mini gym. Quiet and tranquil surroundings. A good restaurant and within easy reach of Fields by trike or Jeepney. The Jr Suites are P2700 but P2400 after discount with Beeline. The rooms are the best in Angeles.

The Orchid Inn - Now after extensive renovations and two new wings, the most popular hotel with the majority of tourists. Based right in the heart of the nightlife action, on Real St. The Orchid has very good quality new rooms, and at just  US$35 a night. Or US$40 for the larger Family sized room. They have a swimming pool and two dining areas and also now a nightclub on site. Down side if any is that it can be busy and booking has to be done well in advance to get in...(high occupancy rate and waiting list) The heart of the action means it can be noisy and you may have unwelcome guests who know where you are, getting into the hotel and knocking at your door when you are otherwise occupied!. The hotel management are extremely good and do their best to stop this - but it happens. - Otherwise one of the best hotels in town. They have two class of rooms, the family room and the superior room

The Phoenix Hotel - Located up on Perimeter Road and within very easy reach of the bars and nightlife, the Phoenix has some excellent rooms and is a popular hotel. A very good restaurant and a small pool. The VIP rooms are best at just over US$33 or the smaller standard rooms at US$25. A good alternative if you want the Orchid but it is full. The Phoenix is Aussie owned and run and is highly recommended.

The Clarkton hotel - Further up Perimeter towards the Oasis, the Clarkton is another excellent quality hotel. The have a good restaurant and do excellent 'eat all you want' breakfast buffets and dinner buffets. A good pool area and nice comfortable rooms. The double Deluxe rooms at US$29 or the Suite room at US$40 both inc of breakfast are the rooms to go for.

The Vegas International hotel - Back down near the Phoenix hotel is the Vegas International. This hotel is economical and rooms after discount are P960 a night with breakfast. The hotel has friendly staff and reasonable restaurant and good pool area.

The Premiere Hotel - Right next door to Vegas and a similar style. Again the hotel is economical at P750. A little older than the Vegas and slightly lower quality rooms. A good pool and bar area.

The Sunset Gardens hotel - Sister hotel to the Premiere and located opposite the Phoenix. German managed and run. The rooms are a little basic but, it has a good pool area and restaurant and gym. Rooms are around P750 a night.

The Marlim Mansions and Century Resort hotel on MacArthur Highway - Both of these hotels are often over looked. They are conveniently located and within very easy reach of the bars. They come into the economical class hotel with the better rooms being as good as most in Angeles. They also have all the restaurants and Savers Mall on MacArthur. Marlim has a nice pool and restaurant, and the better rooms at both hotels at around P2000 a night are recommended - discount available, weekly rates available. Rooms start at around P1100 at the Marlim. The Century resort also has the Casino  Filipino on site.

Rumours Hotel - Opposite the Vegas hotel. 8 rooms similar style to the Vegas. You have no pool or restaurant but share facilities over the road at The Vegas. Rooms are P800 a night.

The Europhil hotel. - Located within easy walking distance of Fields Ave by Checkpoint. The Europhil has a very good pool area and theJunior Suite rooms are great value at P1300.

On to the more budget class hotels and we have a few to recommend.

The Travelers Inn - Located at the back of Insomnia bar there are 8 re-furbished rooms at P900 a night.

The Bonanza hotel -  Located the other side of MacArthur Highway. The hotel is Aussie run, they have a good restaurant and pool area. It is a quiet and tranquil hotel. The rooms are pretty basic but clean and acceptable. Deluxe rooms at P785 with breakfast and the VIP rooms at P1200 are the better rooms. Discount available for weekly stays. They run a free jeepney service back and forth to Fields Ave

The Southern Star hotel - Located up Perimeter Road near the Oasis and Clarkton. The Southern Star is Aussie Run and has sister hotels in La Union and Puerto Galera. So if you are planning a side trip to either place consider them as they will give you a good rate at their sister hotels. The hotel has a nice pool and restaurant area and a bar on location called Foxy's.

The Hotel La Casa - This small 6 room family run hotel is located up Perimeter Road. The owner is an ex-pat from Las Vegas and the hotel has a bar and restaurant. Rooms are clean and basic and are only P530 a night - weekly rates available.

Other hotels to consider are The America Hotel, The Tropicana, the Park Chicago and Anchorage, Souel Garden, The Woodlands Park and Swagman.

Again for full details and prices of the recommended hotels please visit the web-site where you will find photographs, and booking forms.

It can be solved by hiring a jeepney for a few hours. Just flag one down at Checkpoint. We had a van and decided to head out there. As there was a group of 12 we decided on a set meal of authentic Chinese cuisine The set price was around P6,000 for all but we added a couple of dishes and drinks for a total bill of around P8,000.

The food was authentic, to the degree that it may not suit everyone's tastes. Seas cucumbers, sharks fins various things I'd personally never heard of let alone seen on a dish.. It was a good meal and the service was good. One thing, they don't have spirit drinks other than by the bottle! Still a good place to eat for that special occasion.

Above Black Jacks Bar is Black Jacks Swiss Restaurant. They have a balcony to sit out and eat and watch the action on Real St. It is open from 11am to 2.30pm and again in the evening at 6pm through until 10pm.

There is the excellent Luk Foo restaurant out on the base at Fontana resort, who also have a good restaurant and BBQ. Don't forget the hotels all have great restaurants. The Oasis, Clarkton (buffets) The Orchid Inn are three of the better ones that come to mind.

The Nightlife

Fields Ave.

The Nightlife in Angeles is wide and varied and the bars reflect a changing face of the district. Every year bars close and new bars open. Some bars just change hands and change names. Here is our latest updated review of the bars as of June 2002.

Bar EWR or TG system in Angeles

The majority of bars in Angeles are 'go-go' styled bars. The EWR (Early work release) or TG (Tour Guide) system is that you pay the bar a fee (P1000) to take the girl of your choice out of the bar. This fee is for her to be released from work duties only. The lady will recieve 50% of that in commission. Tipping is not mandatory. Although a small tip will be appreciated. Local Drinks are around P35 during happy hour P55 at other times and Ladies Drinks can range from P100 - P150 Most bars open around 5-6pm some earlier and close between 2am-5am

A guide of the bars some useful insights...

I have seen many 'newbies' arrive in Angeles and feel lost as to how things work... Sure, they know they can TG/EWR a lady. But, they need to know a few more fundamentals than that to really enjoy themselves.  I have seen guys pop their head in a bar take one look and walk straight back out. Never EVER, write off a bar on the first visit or impression. Bars change from day to day, and even from hour to hour.

If you are here to enjoy yourselves then enjoy yourself.... Bar hops are one way to see and experience the bars. Talking to local ex-pats or fellow travelers will get you all sorts of useful advice.

Here is the method I have used for years and years and always works for me (it may or may not work for you) I walk into a bar, and find a seat with a good view of the stage. I order a beer or drink of my choice. I then look up and down the stage. I look to see which girl if any is attractive too me.

Now, in doing that I may spy 2 or 3 in the line-up. So then I look to make eye contact. If I do, I use the eye contact, and smiles to see if SHE is interested in me, or more inclined to look in the mirror at her hair or make-up etc!

OK so maybe one of the 3 return the eye contact and smiles. So that is the one to then, to try and flirt and chat with - you do not necessarily need to buy her a drink at this point. - Remember in most bars they have TWO line ups which switch every 30 minutes - So no joy in first group, may not be a waste if in the second group there are several that interest you.

During this time you are sipping away at your drink.... flirting with one maybe two, and trying to make some small talk - easy if your sitting at the stage (you can't do this sitting at the back or in the corner somewhere!)

If the ice is broken and there appears to be some interest on her part to you, then is the time to call her down for a drink.... Some guys out there, say there is no need to buy a girl a drink, that they are all whores, and you should just pick one and pay the fee and leave.... WRONG! (IMHO) If you do that you leave yourself open to a bad experience -a blow out or runner! And have yourself to blame.

You see attitude is IMPORTANT. - If you come here with the attitude that they are all whores then you are coming to the wrong place! - It does not matter how many places you have visited before, how you operate in Latin America or Thailand - The Philippines is different. Treat them with some respect and consideration, and remember that they do not consider themselves as whores - even if you do. Do that and you will have a better time here. The girls work out of necessity in the bars, and they look at you as potential boyfriends not 'punters' or customers for sexual services.

Okay, that aside - back to the bar. You have selected a girl that has made eye contact and flirted a little... Then you call her down for a drink. (P125-P150) You sit and chat with her for 20 minutes over the drink, getting to go through the small talk. Again look to see how interested she is in you. If you think the 'chemistry' is right and a TG is in order, then start to check whether she wants to.... She may well say she has menstruation or is a cherry girl and that maybe true or maybe her way of saying 'no' without hurting your feelings too much.

Of course it should be pointed out at the flirting on stage point you can ask "are you a cherry" or are you on "mens" - that way avoiding the ladies drink.

If all the signals are green - then it is up to you to decide to TG.

Another piece of advice. If it is early and she is the one you want and she agrees to go. But, you want to bar hop and look around first for future references :) then pay the TG and tell her you will comeback for her as you promised to meet some of the guys in another bar....She will wait. And you can go explore without being seen with a girl on your arm in the other bars - This is important! as you will discover later. (Another night in another bar you want to TG a girl and she will remember seeing you in the bar with another girl the night before -Filipina's have memories like Elephants they never forget a face or name)

So off you go, on to other bars and look for future dates - or if someone outstandingly better comes along then you can TG her instead.... If your lucky you can get in a short time with the outstanding one, send her packing and still get back for TG #1.! If not, well you decide - lose P1000, or save miss outstanding for night #2....

Let's go back a minute and assume in bar #1 there was nothing that appealed to you in group one. Remember 30 minutes maximum in any one bar, and group two takes to the stage. There you go through the process again. Only after seeing both groups, can you dismiss that bar, that night as not having anyone suitable for you..... And tomorrow, is another night, they may have new, or other girls turn up the next night!

Repeat in 5 or 6 bars per night, and you will soon become an expert. - Some want to rush through every bar and see everything in as little time as possible. Wrong approach. In truth if you are here for 10-14 days you probably will not have enough time to explore all the bars and avenues of fun to the full. It is almost foolish to try and do ALL of the bars... Many have tried, most have failed.

Find the bars that you like best. Use previous information and the word on the street in town from other hotel guests, ex-pats etc as to which bars appear to be 'hot' at the moment. Because as I said every bar has good nights, and bad nights... And every night if different in every bar.

If you want oral stimulation... a word of advice. Many girls will outright deny they do that.... Yet many do, but it will probably mean more than one TG with the girl before she knows you well enough to do that.... If you want this make sure you ask first to avoid disappointment... Or be prepared to TG more than once. Can't wait? - Then take a walk down Santos St before you go to the bars for a TG.

Hope the above helps some of you have a better experience in Angeles - And now onto the bars:

Bottom of Fields Ave.

Misty's Bar - Located within the Tropicana hotel and attached to Molly Malones restaurant. This is a nice bar and usually with a good line up. There are plenty of seats available around the center stage. A good atmosphere is easily generated in this bar on bar hop nights. Stages Doghouse meetings where they always put on a good show. Nice costumes as well.

Left : Misty's and Right: Blue Nile

Blue Nile -open 7pm-4am Across the road to one of the newest bars in town. Blue Nile is a large 'glitzy bar' that has had a lot of investment. There are two stages and two floors. The center stage is on a hydraulic lift and rises up to the top stage. Novel, but hardly necessary really. Seating is poor around the stages. However, the bar is large and has a mass of very attractive girls. This is one bar to be considered on any 'hot' list and has been since it opened. Noisy so don't go looking for good conversation.

Nero's Bar - Right next door and same management and owners. Was opened nearly a year earlier and was at the time the biggest investment made in new bars. A large and again 'glitzy' bar that I prefer to the Blue Nile. Again a mass of girls a couple of very nice mamasams, and great costumes. The large center stage has seating all around to get close up and personal.

Valentines Bar - CLOSED -Will be open again by the end of 2002 for sure. Again the same owners as Blue Nile and Nero's and again massive investment taking place to make this a two level bar and much bigger than before. If you have ever been to Valentines before I assure you it will be nothing like Valentines of old - a new name will also happen. As with the other two bars in this group it will have a theme.

Superstars - A small bar and often over looked. Couple of Aussies own the bar and some nights they have a girl or two worth stopping off to see. Not a big line-up and located next to the big bars with big line-ups often does not get much attention. Shame because the smaller bars can be where you will find a gem and have most fun.

Top Hat - A large bar that has recently undergone some minor changes in layout, for the better. They have moved the bar to the other side and this has helped create a better atmosphere. It has a pool table and a large center stage. The line-up has been good in recent months as well. Friendly bar with the music at a level you can talk over.

G-Spot - The old Thunderstruck/ball bars have been renovated and changed beyond recognition. G-Spot is owned by a group out of Las Vegas and they too have invested heavily. The bar layout and design is first class with ample seating and seating around a long stage with a circular end that has a shower head installed above it for shows. Always appears to be a good line up and well worth visiting a few times.

Left : Top Hat and Right: Ayers Rock

Ayers Rock - Another of the G-Spot group. Opened only in the last couple of months. Downstairs has a center stage and go-go dancers. With bench and table seating around the outside. There is a good pool table too. Upstairs and out at the front of the bar is a restaurant and hangout bar. This again has had massive investment and is a very good design. The restaurant specializes in Aussie styled BBQ's. Great place to visit.

Woody's Bar and Restaurant. - If you have been here before you will know it is a English styled pub and restaurant. Serving good food at inexpensive prices. Now however, as well as this and the pool table there is a go-go dance area and girls available. Check it out.

Champagne Bar - Long established bar and the lead bar in the Champagne group of bars. This small but stylish bar has always had a good reputation for their line-ups. It is no different now. Same mamasam as ever, and well worth looking in on. Don't take pictures in there though, they don't allow camera's.

Welcome Inn - Potentially a good bar but a bad reputation for many a year got it tagged as the 'unwelcome inn' The line up is not always that good but as with any bar things change and you should try it at least once on any visit.

Dirty Duck- What was the happy hooker, and became the Dolphin St Bar has now been refurbished again and opened as the Dirty Duck in May 2002. A center stage and seating around the bar. On the small side but a good number of dancers in the opening weeks.

Bananitas - What a name! German owned, the old Lash bar (formerly Flash before that) underwent a change. They renovated the bar and put the stage in the center. A nice change and a good bar still to visit. Lots of girls and many new faces.

Treasure Island -open 6pm-3am. Formerly Cockatoo Bar. The Go2Phil.com team of Duck and myself took over this bar in May 2001. It was run down and only had 8 dancers. With very little structure changes but a general clean up and work on an upstairs bar, the bar was purchased as a meeting place for members of Go2Phil.com (TSM very welcome) We have over 20 dancers now in this small but fun bar with music at a level you can talk over...Fun is still the emphasis with 'body shots' still available :)

Left : Treasure Island and Right: Silk Stockings

Silk Stockings - This is a new bar located at the back of Treasure Island. Converted from what was a budget hotel, the bar is large and spacious. Lots of girls in the line up with stockings and garters as costumes. Nice bar.

Volcano Bar - Another in the Champagne group. Was one of the first new development theme bars a couple of years ago. A large bar. They renovated last year and moved the stage to the center around that damn tree... Now a lot better layout. Good line up as ever.

Kokomos - On the corner of Santos St. This hangout bar and Internet center also offers restaurant facilities, and a swimming pool, where it stages numerous wet-t-shirt contests during the year. The front section has been redesigned into a hangout bar, and also Skips Ribs. Nice place to use as a base and meet up with people.

Central Fields Ave - Santos St.

The main section of Bars. We can start with a walk down A.Santos St. There are many hangout styled open-aired bars. A little shabby looking but where you will find many cute looking girls that have certain specialties, shall we say.

The Caddy Shack - A hangout bar with a pool table and a few GRO's - they have a golf club that as a member or non member you can link up with them and go play golf on Tuesday mornings - cost P600. As a bar it is as I say a hangout type place.

Duke of York - Small friendly bar with links to Molly Malones... The leader of Doghouse (Bulldog) stages a doghouse meeting here. The bar is again a hangout type of place with GRO girls who have 'stay-in' rooms at the back.

WOW - Located next door to Duke of York.... There are bars down the left hand side of Santos that have backla's (ladyboys) Wow has some as does Luz and Firestone Empire so be aware of that.... It does get dark down there at night and after a few beers you need to be careful :) - Some of these bars do have girls as well. Can be fun though just hanging out and shooting the **** with them.

Now to the more popular bars on the right hand side of Santos St - No backla's!

Heavens Bar -Strangers - Shadows 2 - Blue Parrot - Wantok-  Honky Tonk - Niagra and Flaming bar are all bars on the right hand side of Santos. All open-aired hangout bars with GRO's and stay-in rooms.... Have fun.

Real St

Lollipop Bar - Located on the Corner of Santos and Real St, and part of the Kokomos group of bars is still going strong. A good pool table and a fair sized line-up.

Midnight Rodeo - Opposite Lollipop is a open aired live music hangout bar. A large bar inside where they play live Country and Western styled music.

Marine Bar - (CLOSED) Formerly Splash and before that Kosmos and Mudbones. This bar has seen many changes in the last three years and despite various owners and name changes nothing appears to have helped. Currently closed and for sale again.

Next door on Real St is a new development that we understand will incorporate a small hotel with some bar or bars inside. We will have to wait and see. Work started recently but will take some months to complete.

King of Diamonds - on Real St. Formerly one of the German owned group the bar improved dramatically when the Kokomos group took over. Usually a good line up and still a popular bar with a good pool table and a walk through to Angeles Broadway complex on Fields.

Couple from Confetti's

Confetti's Bar - Aussie run nice sized bar with friendly atmosphere and good line up. Did some minor alterations on the seating so that there are more bench seats at the back facing the stage,

Cleopatra Bar - Has also undergone several changes in the last 3 years. Hans the German manager moved on and the Kokomos group moved in. They sold the bar last year to the Las Vegas group that run G-Spot and now Ayers Rock as well. Similar lay out to G-Spot with a shower on stage. The old layout has completely gone and they also have a piano room. Usually a fairly good line up and a attractive bar.

Goldengate - (CLOSED) - Has been closed now for some time. The bar is up for sale but so far no takers.

Cartunes - (CLOSED) Bought by the Orchid Inn over a year ago and has remained closed throughout. No signs yet of what they intend to do with it. Word was that they were also going to make an offer on Why Not Music Box disco around the corner when the lease comes up for renewal.

Black Jacks -  German owned bar that has karaoke most nights. This bar has go-go dancers but only appeals to those usually on a bar hop with a girl who wants to sing! Nice layout and worth looking in once in a while. Black Jacks popular restaurant is located upstairs.

Flamingo Bar - Located within the Orchid Inn complex at the back by the pool. Opened late last year as a on site bar. Small but nice bar with a few good lookers in the line-up.

Y-Not Disco - Local Disco

Cuddles - (CLOSED) Cuddles bar and restaurant at the back of Real St closed last year.

Raymond St

Roy's Bar - An English styled pub with a pool table, also serves good food. They have several waitresses and the occasional GRO. There are no TG's/EWR's in Roy's Bar. However, the girls are free agents to go on dates in their own time.

Shano's Bar - Not actually on Raymond St but located next to Roy's Bar in the side st. Shano's is often over looked because of its location, however a nice medium sized bar with pool table music videos and a usually fair line up.

Erotica Bar - Owned by same owners as Black Jacks this bar was formerly Private Dancer Too. The completely refurbished and redesigned the bar. Put in a stage for the dancers and a stage for live bands with a sunken dance floor for customers. After a few months, they appear to have had a change of heart and redesigned the bar again to have more emphasis on the go-go style of operation. Now do shows twice a week.

Las Vegas Bar - opened a little over a year ago this bar was the old Abby Road which lay empty for a few years. They completely rebuilt the bar inside and now have a large classy styled bar with a large line up always worth visiting and checking over.

Stingers Bar - Same bar as it has been for a number of years. Were the first bar a few years ago now to increase their local drink prices to P55 then P60. Personally stopped going into this bar around then. Pictures are forbidden as well. When I have been in the lie up is usually fairly good. Try it and see what you think.

Jadecool - First virtual Internet bar is still in operation but, the Internet Center has all closed down. The main operation has now relocated to Makati. Still personally can not see for the life of me why anyone who visits here frequently would want to pay big $$ to join to chat to bar girls online and buy drinks online -However, many did and still do. The main appeal is to those that probably will never visit the Philippines.

Central Fields Ave

Going back down now to Fields Ave at Kokomos.

Rhapsody - Formerly Panama Jacks, Rhapsody Bar is a average sized bar with plush settings and low lighting. Designed to be a bar to bring a girl friend into and dance, they have a go-go dancer line up. The seating design though leaves a lot to be desired if the bar is busy you can not get a seat at the bottom near the stage and dance floor. Good bar however.

La Bamba -open 2pm -2am Sister bar to Rhapsody and Blue Fox, and a long established bar that opens at 2pm in the afternoon. Always a good looking line up and friendly bar. Center stage with ample seating all around the bar.

Blue Fox - Small bar that originally was a bakery then the Germans bought it and open a bar they called Giant Bar - which was surprising as it was a small bar! Later sold to Stacy a local Ex-Pat who called it Connections. However, Stacy decided to buy a bar up Perimeter Road and sold the bar to the La Bamba Group. They changed the name to Blue Fox. This is a nice small bar with lots of fun girls and a relaxing and nice atmosphere.

Left : Voodoo and Right : Blue Fox

Voodoo -open 2pm-3am The favourite bar of the Kokomos Group. Moved its location here around two years ago now, after the group split up. This was previously Cozy Bar and then Dusk til Dawn. They had a walk through to Splash at one time but that is now closed off. Voodoo is still a fun and popular bar.

Y-Bar - Was one of the Champagne group of bars but recently sold to independent ownership. It is the same bar as it always was just a different line up. Worth looking in and visiting a few times for sure.

DMZ Bar - Very little has changed here in three years or so. A large bar with a large TV screen, two pool tables and a center stage with seating all around. The line up is fair and often changes. You could find a gem in here occasionally.

Cottontails -Inside the Angeles Broadway complex. This has undergone so many changes in the last three years. When I first got here the bar was called the Titanic and it sank! The Kokomos group took over and put in several bars, renaming the Titanic, Loveboat and adding a small bar called the Library, and a two floored bar called Hugs and Kisses. At the front they moved the old Ziggy's to the location. Later they dropped The Library, and closed off Ziggy's moving it to the back to replace Hugs and Kisses and called the upstairs bar Foxhole. Still with me? - Well now they have extended Loveboat which is now called Cottontails out across the front of the bar area and closed off the back altogether. There are two stages and ample seating, the line up is usually good and they wear sexy lingerie outfits. Looks like they have got a better formula here now than for sometime. Check it out.

Next door is Rick's Cafe a 24 hour restaurant and Internet Center that shows movies around the clock. Always worth stopping off for a bite to eat or just to chill out and catch a movie.

Back across the Street and next door to Volcano Bar.

Shamrocks - Was formerly the Irish Pub and Internet Center. They have a large bar area with a center stage and a small stage at the back. The place has not really found it's niche yet. The line up is worth checking out from time to time. A good sized bar with potential.

Club Fantastic - Another bar that is fairly spacious inside with little changed over the last three years. Definitely no pictures allowed and they have a center stage with all around seating. Some good line ups on occasions, and a pool table.

Angels - Changed hands and renamed from Papilion recently. Inside the decor and design remains the same. The line up has of course changed. A nice bar and good management. Well worth visiting.

Birds of Paradise - (CLOSED) was a hangout bar above Papilion and had a restaurant. Was also the meeting point for Hash Harriors. Now closed. Last I heard it was to be the new Jadecool venue for Angeles. But, nothing has happened along those lines yet. If you liked the food there, the chef and his Indian specialties has moved to Kokomos.

Upper Fields Ave

Roadhouse -open 6pm-3am. One of the longest established bars in Angeles. One of the original bars to move from Ermita as well. The bar has a rock music theme, with two TV monitors playing music videos. The dancers and staff are all well trained, and you won't get any standing around looking in the mirrors here from the girls. This bar is a drinking bar, where lots of visitors meet up. They have a 2 for 1 drink happy hour from 6-8pm with bar snacks. The bar also has the best CR (comfort room - toilet) in town.

Illusions - Another long established bar run by Woolf and Bruce the manager. Always a good line up and a friendly bar with TV monitors and a pool table. Well designed bar as well with all seating facing the stage.

Around the corner you will find Butterflies Bar another largely over looked bar but a nice size and lay out with a pool table. The line up changes quite frequently so check it out.

The Big Boys Bar... Is a bar for male dancers and like minded males!

Sky Trax - Local Disco.

The Jungle Bar - Aussie run bar. The Jungle is a fair sized bar with a center stage and ample seating. They have a pool table as well. Always has a good line up to check over.

The Kitten Club line up and Right: The cute Kitten Club Door girl.

Monte Carlo Bar - The newest development to Fields Ave. A new bar built from scratch by the same owner as Las Vegas Bar. A large bar with a big stage and seating all around. Opens at 7pm

The Kitten Club - Formerly Valhalla Bar. A nice lay out and design. They to have a shower on stage. The line up is worth looking over.

Brown Sugar - Formerly Ziggy's. The Champagne group took on the bar and renovated the bar completely. A good sized bar with a good line up and a popular bar to visit.

Tahatian Queen Bar - (CLOSED) Under going re-development and renovations. The bar was sold recently and the Champagne group are going to completely change the bar. Expected to open later this year.

Byrd Cage Bar - Set at the back of Mr. T's open aired bar and cafe. This bar is circular in design and small. But a fun and wild bar and worthy of being on anyone's 'hot' bars list at the moment.

Insomnia and After Dark Bar What was the old Voodoo and Private Dancer became Voodoo and Mirage under the Kokomos group and there were doors knocked through connecting the two bars. Voodoo was always popular and a late night bar closing at 5am. After the split up of the Kokomos group, two of the former Kokomos partners Heiko and Roger (A TSM member of old) took over the bar and the Travelers Inn hotel at the back and renamed the bars Insomnia and After Dark. Still a late night/early morning bar. Good line up with some of the old Voodoo girls still evident. The manager was Texas Wild Child a character in himself and now another message board member,(AC2 and Go2Phil) Jung has also joined the bar.

The Club - Another long established bar. Very little has changed Vicky still runs the bar after a very brief period where the bar switched into the Kokomos group hands, and although former manager Barry has moved on (to Misty's) the bar has still done reasonably well.

Just a little further up on the corner of the next street is a relatively new place called The Hole I ashamed to say that neither I or many others have appeared to have ventured into the place as I have no idea what type of bar it is, and have read no reports on the place as of yet.

Left :Dance contest at Cleopatra and Right :The Jungle

Further up Fields near Checkpoint is of course Margarita Station. The long established 24 hour restaurant, Internet center and bar with two pool tables. They do excellent food and daily specials and their Thai food is the best in town. No visit to Angeles would be complete without starting or ending and evening at 'The Ville."

Bars featured

In the above review 75 Bars were reviewed. 6 currently (June 2002) are closed. A further 7 are hangout bars or restaurant/Internet centers - 2 of which are currently closed and a further two were local Filipino Disco's.

Don Juico Ave - Perimeter Road

Walking on up from Margarita Station toward Friendship is an area known as Perimeter Road. Actually it is Don Juico Ave which runs parallel to the Perimeter Road of Clark base.

We should add that walking from here up to around the Oasis hotel is 4/5 kms and in the heat, is not advisable unless your Mr.TSM who would walk regularly! - Jeepneys can be hailed at P4 to cover the whole distance and just stop off at each point we cover.

Next door to Margarita Station is Mr. JJ's supermarket, and also a drug store. Then a series of good money changers booths.

Across the next street is the open aired market (hold your nose it stinks of fish!) and then you reach Checkpoint Airport Terminal Building (with no Airport of course!) Inside here you will find Bob's Mongolian BBQ and Dominoes Pizza as well as  a Swagman Travel office and Internet Center.

Perimter Road Bars

Many of these bars are GRO type bars with a few places that have go-go dancers. They have ladies drinks and EWR/TG's like Fields some cater for ST. (short time) You will need to ask mamasam if they cater to that or go EWR/TG - The Perimeter Road bars are generally a little less expensive than Fields. Local Drinks arounf P35 and Ladies Drinks from P70 the bars also generally open in the afternoon arounf non-2pm and close late (midnight) or later in a few cases.

Club Rio - The same owner and what was the Jolly Frog is now also a good styled Go-Go bar it also is where the runner up at the latest Swagman Wet T Shirt contest works. The bar has cozy corners and a small stage with 3 or 4 dancers at any one time. There are GRO's as well. Open at 2pm.

Alternatives

As well as all the go-go bars of Fields Ave and the few up and around Perimeter Road there are a host of Karaoke style bars which often get over looked by western visitors. Karaoke Bars does not mean YOU have to sing!

There are many beautiful Filipina's working in these bars because they are too shy or proud to work in a go-go bar. They do not have EWR's or TG's in these type of bars, although they have VIP rooms which are private and designed for some heavy flirtatious experiences.

However, most will arrange to meet you at your hotel after work or the following day and exchange phone numbers etc.... So don't over look these opportunities. The same applies to the KTV Showgirl bars.

There are several such bars along MacArthur Highway and along Don Juico Ave.

Here are a few of them:

Starting right at the top at Friendship gate there is the big Super Club and also Kim's music lounge then as you walk down Don Juico Ave towards the Maharajah and Oasis hotel you will find Club Angelica which is up for sale right now. Shinjyuku Videoke is next as you move along.

Just around the corner from Buzzky is the Hidden Garden laseroke, this is a small bar with the odd girl available to entertain you. The R & B music venue is next, again with live music most nights.

Down by the Clarkton and of course there is mirrors bar attached to the hotel but also there is Club Isadora music lounge and the Saikai Karaoke Pub & Restaurant a place to eat, drink and be merry with one of the GRO's

Engrande is the old Talk of the Town Karaoke bar, . Carrying on down now towards the Galleon Building and you will find the 206 Theater Club.

Next you reach the Galleon Building and work is still ongoing there. Behind the Galleon is the Blue Boar Inn connected to The Hotel La Casa. The VFW is also just around the corner from here. Next is a new place about to open called the Horse Wheel Grill this nipa hut styled restaurant will server American, Japanese and Filipino food.

Nearing home territory now and you will find the Runway KTV right next door to the more familiar Bubbles Bar. The final place worth considering is down opposite Garfields and is called Hideyoshi which is a Chinese restaurant and karaoke.

MacArthur Highway

There are a host of other bars and places to visit. Mainly Karaoke type of bars. But also some drinking type GRO places along MacArthur and around Dau. Also in Angeles its self, there are two other locations. The Crossing, and The Area. We are not reviewing them here. - They are mainly local bars run and owned by locals for locals. And it is strongly advised to avoid these locations. They are not really for tourists and are amongst the seedier and totally un acceptable side of the nightlife. If support warrants it, we will fully review some more of the Karaoke type places and include them in ay updates we do over the months to come on www.go2phil.com - HAVE FUN
