Sosua/Cabarete update ...
Only photos I took were girls I used for models on the tee-shirt page. This girl is nightly in Cabarete in the sunken bar and available :-)
(this trip never made it to Puerta Plata, seems no fun without Billy there and well, maybe I just was a little lazy)
I come to this area every three month to visit close friends and relax a bit. I do know a lot of people and have some good contacts, but usually I just come here to kick-back (the opposite of Cartagena where it is go-go-go all the time), do some back reading and just visit good friends.
Well, there is no really good news. If you read dr1 ((www.dr1.com) youíd know the Dominican Republic is in a big tourist slump. My girlfriend works for EMI (http://sunvillagebeachresort.com/) and I know they are really pulling back and one property in Puerta Plata is almost 100% empty. She is getting worried about her job! In Sosua many hotels have closed (seems only Fedrico at PJís is doing well). Most charter flights now are headed to the ìhotì Punta Cana resorts on the East end. Sosua (and also this is low season to boot) at night is a ghost town. The famous (infamous) Merengue bar has just a few people (usually 100ís) and some of the ugliest girls Iíve ever seen in my life. Plaza Sosua is not much better and the strip joint above it (just reopen) theyëd have to pay me to watch their girls take off their clothes off.
Worse yet Toulcan and Willyís disco are closed and if there is one bright spot here is the disco Hi-Caribe which is open and on the week-ends you can find some good looking girls who you can convince to be bad. On the week-days, it is the hard core Haitian girls that mob you (and scare you) that are there (little else). I also found some amateurs playing the slots at the casino and they have a little bar where you cab check things out -- but not a whole lot to choose from and many are the same girls you see over and over and over.
I guess it seems right, no tourists, no girls and only the hard core exits. Driving around though you can still find some gems (need to be lucky here) and visiting the small open-air bars is a good bet (although 70% of these are now closed too) to some a newbie or something that might look good with her clothes off. Donít forget PJís (big orange colored restaurant on west end of town) which are friend Fedrico just took over, he certainly has the best looking waitresses and he will fill you in on anything new (a real french Playboy).
My favorite place in Sosua is(duh, called Sosua CarWash)the big car wash as you enter town (from Cabarete side) and few tourists but lot of Dominicans (especially on the week-end). Over the year Iíve met two girls here (just smiling) who turned out to be very, very hot and cute and dated one of the bartenders (they change monthly, very low pay). It is also just fun and watch the Dominicans at play (and boy can they dance) and sometimes they just invite you over and then the fun really begins. Everyone always has a friend or a sister. Just wear a Chicago Cubs hat (Sammy is a natinal hero here) and someone will always invite you over :-).
But Sosua (yes the great beach is still there and hotels are now dirt cheap) is a ghost of its former self (as I hear Boca chica is) and the police still harass any mini skirted lass that does the walk after 11:P.M. Youíd think they stop it now that they made the place a morgue ?? go figure. For guys coming here (Sosua) to get laid by beautiful young, horny and sexy ladies -- well, only in your dreams, sorry.
Cabarete
Okay a little better here (although quality is nothing like three years ago) and even though this is euro-trash heaven (full length tattooed bodies, orange hair guys) it has the most traffic and nicer setting now than Sosua. Sea-Horse Ranch has now changed their web site to say ìnear the famous Cabarete beachî rather than the Sosua one -- you get the idea of whatís going on. A perfect beach for running and observing (although only Dominicans are only on Sunday) and yes some working girls do walk the beach (but will be arrested if hassle you, so you must pursue them). As bachataboy pointed out the beach chair guys are very helpful here (unlike the ones in Sosua with noses in the air) and I think it is casue they are just kids who work in the near-by barrios (as Sabanete and Cienga) and arenít spoiled (big spenders were on the Sosua beach). The beach is expansive and much more relaxing than Sosua and sometimes youíll get a smile from some walking girls (yes, they are on prowl, but discreetly).
Ariel (who is a Zank Panky -- Dominican name for gigolo) was good because he was just 18, knew tons of girls in his barrio and enjoyed helping (and of course a few extra pesos). All beach boys (guys who give you chairs in Cabarete) have offered me girls (seldom in Sosua) but the younger ones get ones from their barrio and meet you later at night, while the others (bosses) just get a pro from a local bar in town. Big difference. But as in Ctg, a knowledgeable beach boy is worth his weigh in gold (well, pussy here) and if you find one you like then have him talk you out at night -- this is a GREAT OPTION FOR FUN AND FINDING SOMETHING SPECIAL!!! Going to a real Dominican Disco with a guy who everybody and you as his ride -- well this is really fun and you might, just might, meet something really special.
(Ariel is at the Bic wind
surfering center at the east end of the beach)
http://www.tsmpublishing.com/messageboard/upload/aeriel.jpg
If you come at night alone then under the big Fuji sign (middle of town) is where the girls hang out. A small steep down bar and after 10.P.M there are usually some 10 girls or so (but alas, same girls every night and nothing better than a ì6î and that is doing good.) Ariel took me to Dominican bar about twenty minutes outside Cabarete (somewhere outside Sabanate) and there itís a whole new ball game. I like flaka (skinny) and the mamasan of the bar pulled two out of her 12 girls (they serve drinks and you see these outside road bars all over the DR AND YES the girls are available, you just have to know what it is all about). Seems Dominican like fat (gordo) and finding a slender girl can be hard. Salida (leaving the bar) was 100 pesos and the girl 400. Seems if I was a Dominican maybe half of this price and the girl was sweet and naive back in my room (asked if she could take a shower, if I was happy and if I wanted more -- really!). She was thrilled to be with a tourist (unlike the greedy hogs of Sosua). Now, even though she was cute, she had three kids and maybe a ì6 plus,î hey, this is the DR!
You must remember chicas for pay is a Dominican cultural thing (reason for all those Cabanas on the road -- for quickies). It is only when foreigners and locals mix does the confusion (and problems) start. In the DR a 16 girl could already (and usually does) have two kids and had more sex than a 40 male in the U.S. But when put together the clash is a media nightmare (tourists as pedophiles etc.) for the tourist industry (keeping that family image) and so forth in all big tourist areas prostitution is trying to be hidden (reason why girls get arrested on the spot). BUT, this is anti Dominican :-).
Bottom like, get out and explore the wonder country, find a local you feel comfortable with and do what Dominicans do party and change partners every night :-). I also recommend that you do ask a girl for her cedula (id) for a 16 year old can look 24 in the DR and there are scams of people being set up (when the act is done and the girl is gone the police just happen to knock on your door with the girls mom -- should I say more). I also recommend you stay away from all kinds of drugs, for out of the tourist area (where police are in force) all sorts of drugs are prevalent and easily accessible -- NO WAY JOSE, IT WILL TAKE YOU BIG $$$$$ TO GET OUT OF JAIL.
In retrospect I think of the different cultures between Colombia and the DR -- in the DR they arrest girls who bother foreigners and in Colombia they welcome the interaction (real beach life, in fact Iíve had the local beach patrol help me in picking -up girls :-)-- amazing the difference in attitudes!!! Now, if only I could explore in Colombia in a car and if the DR could get a realistic tourist policy together -- ah, just dreams.
If you need some more photos got the member_photo board and last entry is a member who was there the same time and had a little more fun than me and took some photos (Masnesshd)

Sosua, Cabarete Dom. Rep. Trip. Aug. 2002, Non-Pro scene

I needed a vacation from NYC. Not only from the city, but I'm dating a NY Dominicana who pouts a lot, just kidding. So I flew Continental from Newark airport to Puerto Plata. Nice thing happened, since I had an e-ticket and only carry-on luggage I was able to check in at the gate and was upgraded to first class which I though unusual because I was using a discounted ticket, but who am I to complain
The Flight left on time and I considered buying the entire flight crew champagne for this. Breezed through customs and I was out of the airport 5 minutes before the plane was even scheduled to land. Mr. TSM, himself, met me at the airport and drove me to check out 3 hotels. The first, forgot the name, was nice, but my instinct told me it was not for me. The second was the Sosua Palace, which has potential one day because the owner is investing money in building 2 more floors. I give credit to the owner for advising me to stay elsewhere because of the ongoing construction, dust and noise.
I picked the Europa, clean, nice staff, great rooms. It reminded me of the Costalunga. I was given a choice of virtually any room for 30 dollars, so I took a poolside suite complete with bedroom area and seperate kitchen, Bar, living room. The TV was a new Sony which I find important for the music stations, I love the music and there are 4 all spanish music video channels, like having a boombox. The staff were great. They changed money at the best rate (I checked, the peso hit 18 while I was there).
OK, I didn't care for the Sosua strip. Too many desperate ugly women. Murphys law applies, the uglier the woman, the stonger the headlock she tries to put you in. I was here for non-pro women only. This is my 6th trip to the DR and I have never had a problem finding them, a little work involved. It doesnt hurt that I know spanish and can dance merengue well and am proficient in salsa. And I don't think I am too hard on the eyes. The way to do it is....KEEP MOVING. If a place sucks....MOVE ON.
Mr. TSM told me about his tennis buddy (the man loves tennis!), who had a girlfriend who had 2 friends. OK, lets go. We met in Cabarete, (10 minutes away) and at first it was awkward because it was clear they were shy types. Good thing the one I had my eye on was a smoker (Bruce hates smokers, LOL). She was olive complexion, no kids, good body, nice face, 21 years old and looked great in her Jennifer Lopez jeans. Bruce and I and his tennis buddy split up and I took Lilly to PJ's in Sosua for a drink. We spoke one on one and the comfort level went up. I can't stress this enough, if you LOVE latin countries and know you are going to spend some time there, LEARN SPANISH. Even a 300 word vocabulary is a start. I learned spanish from working in a hispanic area of NYC for 19 years. She became comfortable so I suggested a night of dancing. She was game. However it was only 8:30pm and the discoes get going at midnight, thats a Dominican and NY rule. Only Euro couples go clubbing at 10pm. So we went back to my hotel and after dancing in the room (TV does come in handy, good tunes) and having a few more Presidentes, nature took its course. She was pretty hot. We decided not to hit the disco, we lounged which was cool with me since the day before I went 24 hours w/out sleep. I was up from 4am in NY, early flight) and I hung out till 4am in the DR.She stayed, was sweet, and we both woke up at 9am. Now I felt awkward, on what to do. When you meet nice women in the DR, you don't want to insult them by just handing them money. So I relied on my old standard line. I asked her if she had a sexy red dress. She said no. So I told her that I think she would look great in sexy red mini-dress and I would be honored if I can buy it for her when we do go dancing another day. I got her a cab and promised to call.
That night, I went with Bruce to the High-Caribe disco which is a decent sized disco, air conditioned, and an outdoor patio. Bruce was tired from a 8am tennis match and went home at 1:30, but I stayed. In the disco were a lot of tourists, some chicas, good music. I decided to hang out. Nursing a beer I spotted a group come in, 5 females, 1 guy, all Dominican. The guy was with one of them, but she was the least attractive. 2 were very pretty. If you are slow.........you blow, is my philosophy, so I immediately asked one to dance. After dancing we spoke, they were from Santiago, about 2 hours away. They all worked in the same factory and this was a Saturday night out for them, I was amazed that they were 6 in one car for the ride. Two were very very good looking, sisters, no kids, one 22, one 24, neither ever married. I hung out with them till closing time, 4:30am, exchanged telephone numbers and asked the two, Maria and Belkis if they had plans for tommorrow, Sunday. They agreed to come back to Sosua the next afternoon.
They meant it. I called at 11am, to Santiago, and they agreed to meet me at 3pm, taking the Caribe Bus. We hung out and I had them laughing with stories of NYC. They loved to laugh. They were curious about the Dominican community in NYC. They were really nice and classy women, you could tell. They looked great in jeans, terrific butt cleavage, and flat stomachs, all with pretty faces. Great company! Santiago, although I have yet to see it, I know for a fact has beautiful women because most of the Dominicanas I have dated in NYC are from there. Maria and Belkis showed me a pic of their parents and their father was a blue eyed Spaniard who was born in Santiago. We hung out with Bruce, and had a great lazy Sunday afternoon. I took them back to Sosua, we grabbed a snack and I sent them home by cab. We exchanged telephone numbers and they made me promise to come visit in Santiago, which I agreed. She made me promise to call her older sister and brother-in-law in Kentucky which I did when I got home and her sister virtually interviewd me, LOL. Her American husband was real cool on the phone and gently reminded me that they are good girls. I will definately look them up when I have another week vacation in a month.
My last night there, Bruce already left, I hung out in Cabarete, ate in a great pizza place called Pizza Via (I reccomend the pizza, I am a tough NY pizza critic and I give Pizza Via a thumbs up). I ate alone and I noticed a cute waitress, and we both flirted. She never really met many spanish speaking tourists and she agreed to have a drink with me when she got off in 30 minutes. Yuderka was a pleasure to hang out with, we went to a nce Cabarete beach bar. Another thing to follow up on. I told her I was leaving in the morning and we exchanged telephone numbers. Bruce, another cutie!!
In the DR, its not really hard to meet non-pro's. Just takes time and luck being in the right place and time. You have to move around, go place to place. Go to the clubs where the locals go, be adventurous. Be bold. Say "Vamos a bailar"!!! (Lets Dance)!! Even if you are not up to learning spanish, then learn how to dance. Merengue is simple. I enjoyed 5 great days in the DR. My needs would be met when I got home by my honey as she made sure they were before I left, so just getting laid was not a priority. The challenge of meeting nice girls was. Next trip, I know will be better because I laid some good ground work. But this one was great. No regrets, well, other then not seeing Lilly again before I left. She left 3 messages at the hotel and Bruces tennis buddy called me to see whats up.I didn't know wether to trust him by telling him I met someone else. Would he rat me out and hurt her? So I didn't.
Well, back in NY, and back to the pace of NY. It was nice to kick back. I made the calls, Maria, her sister in the USA, and the Pizza waitress and planned to meet them next month. Good thing my NY honey has used up all her vacation time, hehe. She slyly examined my body for love marks. None, I haven't let anyone give me a hicky since HS. Some are very cellosa and insecure. Stay tuned for PART 2 in a month.
Bruce, really good hanging out with you, you have the right idea. We share the same philosophy, adventure rules!
Here are the two sisters from Santiago ....

Sosua/Cabarete quick update .....

A quick update.
Still working on a long BC/Barahona report, but did find some new stuff last night worth reporting. In Sosua H-Cribe is really rocking (could be the best disco on the North coast of the Dominican Republic). The town is a little dead (considering it is X-mas and hi season) but there is a lot of girls walking around looking to make new friends. If bored, visit the Palace Hotel in afternoon and have a drink, seems always 5-10 girls hanging around (like a safe haven).
Now Cabarete is jam full and it has become one of the few places in the DR that is increasing itís tourism. Now, girls also get hassled on the street but they seem to have a more lay-back attitude and some new clubs are opening. The big disco (almost size of Hi-Caribe) on the east end of town is getting new paint and about to re/open. Also the new ìSurf-Townî disco is now the hot spot used to be Las Brisas) and after mid-night is rocking with all sorts (good and bad girls, couples and people who want to get out of the all-inclusives and have some real fun).
But the big news is a new chica bar right in the middle of Cabarete. Called ìObessionsî it is on the second level next to the sunken bar (look for the Western Union sign) and the owner Franco gave me a tour. You can sit on the street balcony or inside and drink and watch the girls dance and smile at you. Again, like a safe haven for working girlsî and last night 10 chicas all showing their stuff. Now, Franco has decided not to get involved with the girls private life -- meaning there is no leaving fee and ALL THE GIRLS ARE FREELANCING!! I COMPLIMENTED HIM ON THIS!! His philosophy is, if there are nice girls with no hassles the guys will follow -- I couldnít agree more. There are always a few outside by the stairs trying to grab you before you see her competition. Will try and get some photos next week.
Now I did get lucky and found Marie at Equipo (the old El Typico Dominican bar, about 1 kilometer outside Caberet going West) on the way back to Sosua a few days ago and went to pick her up in the afternoon (yes, still have to pay a 200 pesos ìsalidaî fee and girls gets maybe 500 or so). Their rooms scare me (saw a big tarantula once) and this way there was no rush. She even did the dishes after diner :-). I like flaca and shapely (skinny) girls and sometimes hard ( if not impossible) to find in bars. The girls rent rooms at Equipo and also live there -- a fun place especially on a weekend when everyone in the area comes by to dance (big dance floor) and party.
Seems, unlike the South coast, the North coast is getting better :-)

North coast Dominican Republic update and the find of the night (week :-))

Been here for a week or so and wish I had good news. Sosua is dying a slow death and finding talent is really hit and miss. I find the beach boys in Cabarete is good bet, (unlike beach boys of Sosua). Across the street in Cabarete (and in back of the fancy stores) is a small village of shacks and cheap housing were maybe a 1000 people live and of course lots of girls. The Cabarete beach guys always have a few friends and they just run across the street -- it has worked for me the last few times and have found a few hidden jewels.
In Sosua, your best is just driving around till the right girl smiles at you (5 Pm is a great time) for at night only hard core, ugly girls are out -- YES, they are still arresting girls -- why I donët know because there are no tourists here (even the Place was dead when I dropped but they did have their regulars waiting -- just no clients)? Got me? Hi-Caribe is still swinging but again mostly Haitian girls who just grab at you -- go on the week-end and there is a much better selection.
Your best bet is Puerta Plata and just back from a night out with Billy and another Tsmer -- their are some real hidden talent their and tons of bars to choose from. Basically the ìnon-touristî haunts (meaning Dominican places) are still hot. I found this girl at a local bar with Billy and WAS HER FIRST DAY -- love it and what a cutie. But, it is still hard to find a flaca (not fat) chica with no kids (unlike Colombia) but after 20 or bars or so and ìLong Beachî you will find something. Yes, PP has a staggering selection of girlie places -- from three big car washes, strip bars, drinking bars, fancy clubs (Crystals and Bohem), hotel discos (Mountain View is HOT), Long Beach (beach area with maybe 15 outside bars full of girls) and yes ALL girls are available for take out (usually a 200 peso salida fee for ST). In a normal night with Billy I saw maybe a few hundred girls and Mary I grabbed the minute I saw her and heard was first day (just in from Santo Domingo). In the DR, when you see something you like -- grab it for youíll never find her again. What a find!!!
Now Iíve know Billy for a few years now and he is the best Iíve ever seen at helping and caring about new people to the area. He has sota separated from his wife (she is in canada now) and turned his 3-bedroom condo in Puerta Plata in a Bed & Breakfast operation (he or his son is operating the hotel anymore). He is on a retire pension and this supplements his income and does a fabalous job. He will pick you up from the airport and show around for a small fee or if you stay at his place it is sorta included as buddies. He is NOT a pimp, but will show you were to go (and help with translation if needed) and keep you from making a mistake. For a NEWBIE, this is a great solution for a first trip -- lots of hand holding till you get the feel of things. And yes, the Bed & Breakfast operation is Tsm friendly :-).
I donít know the prices or his web site (Billy are you out there?), but his web site is family orientated (you are welcome to bring your wife and kids if so desired) and MAKES THE PERFECT EXCUSE IF YOU ARE MARRIED AND YOUR WIFE QUESTIONS Where YOUíLL BE STAYING). Most guys use the excuse of a wind-surfing or golf holiday (as the Tsmer there was doing) but we know the real reason :-)
Last thing is what I call the rent-a-car shuffle. I always recommend renting a car on the North coast (so much to see and easy driving) but when you land at the airport the guys jerk you around so much you hate the hassle (your reserved price is never what it is suppose to be or your car isnít there). Found a lady (and she is a real doll - like a ì8î) who runs a rent-a-car on PP airport (her name is Gipsy) and will give Tsmerës a flat rate of 600 pesos (about $30.00) and INCLUDE ALL TAXES!! This is for a near new Toyoto Corolla (deluxe model) and upgrades you if your car is gone (tsmer there was put into a new Honda SUV). Her e-mail is adventure_rentcar@hotmail.com or phone is 809-586-0601.
This is the best deal (and better than the internet by far) Iíve found. Trust me, on the way to PP last night I picked up a stunner going to college in PP -- the type of girl youíll never see or meet in a disco or bar. Transportation in the DR is done by a Wa-Wa or public cars which is usually 10 crammed into a old and small car. Girls hate this (always get molested) and will eye you down for a ride. It works :-)

Hi Tsm:
What a great night out with you and Will, and thanks for the "plug" on my companion friendly bed & breakfast. As you pointed out anyone coming down can go to my web site and show his wife/girlfriend where he is staying on his golf/surfing holiday without giving her any negative ideas.
What could be more innocent than staying with a retired Canadian and his wife in their condo.
I do enjoy showing my guests around town in my old blue Toyota pick up. As you and
I found out on tuesday last week we sometimes know more than the local taxi drivers
about where to find the chicas.
Just drop me an e-mail for the rates at my condo. I have two bedroom both with their
own private bathrooms so I can accommodate up to 2 men each with their own bedroom.
Thanks again, Billy
ps: Yes! Tony you do recognise the sofa.

Until PP Billy relocates to Bavaro, Puerto Plata will still be the best spot to chase chicas. I'll be there next week. You can't beat a local guy telling you where to go, where to eat, how much to pay for how long, which chica's have attitudes and which are freshly arrived from the countryside and in the DR Billy is the best.
Just when I think I know a little something about the DR all I have to do is spend a night watching Billy in action and I feel like a newbie. Now with his B&B winter in POP should be jumping. Just like on the golf course, you can't beat local knowlege.
Sosua update ...
My first visit to Sosua was ten years ago and I quickly fell in love. An international open-air airport (fast and friendly) a few miles away, an awesome beach, loads of boutiques, bars and discos (for all kind of flirting and evil thoughts) and plentiful rooms of all prices and styles. Oh I almost forgot, some beautiful and easy girls -- what more could a man ask for!
Things have changed (the beach is still beautiful, but a bit tacky with all the stores
and tee-shirt vendors). The president has closed the three main discos that use to
be Sosua center (too many hookers annoying the public and store owners) and so-forth
there is a huge dead-spot (old Marina Plaza and Mobby Dick intersection) in the central
area (all restaurants and stores in this area are now bordered up too). The girls
are still there, but now mug you as you walk this darkened street section and follow
you the rest (towards Apart Hotel Plaza) of the main drag. One night a cutie in a
mini-skirt and a pregnant lady grabbed my privates and pick pocketed me of $70.00
-- shit I was pissed when it came to pay for dinner and no dinero!!
The main disco are now miles apart (Caribie-Hi and Oxy) and the street is now left
to the above hard core hookers -- sad! Motor-conchos are still 10 pesos and no problem
getting one (this is your least of problems - transportation).
Sosua also seemed a little dead during the day. Many other restaurants and stores
have also closed (which are away from the old hooker corner) and beach action was
lax. The best explanation of the decline of Sosua was the continuing expansion of
all-inclusive resorts and their canned tours and activities that have have kept many
tourists away from the real people and Sosua proper.
Since most businesses are owned by foreigners (95% here are German’s) the Dominican government really doesn’t give a dam -- but what else is new!

Okay, now the good news:
The disco’s (Caribie-Hi, girls must show I.D. to get in and have an escort -- good news for you, just wait outside and pick them off before entering :-)) are still rocking and rolling and there are some real stunners who’d never walk the street. Things start around 11.00 P.M at Oxy (free entrance) and after mid-night the chicas move to the Caribie-Hi. On a good night (Mondays closed) around 12.00 P.M there are 100’s of girls to choose from and it is a blast to figure with morsel to taste first.
YES, ALL GIRLS ARE AVAILABLE!!
Prices are about 20% higher than Boca Chica (girls start at 500 Pesos per/hour) but, as usually in the DR, “ALL” is open for negotiations depending on you, the girl, natural charm and time of night. Of course you can just dance, flirt and talk yourself into a freebie if you have the time and patience of a little real romancing! If you are in a hurry, just say “ how much and let’s go.”
They can close the stores, move the discos, attempt to clean up the streets, but
they can’t stop a determined Dominican lady -- thank God!
New Hotel:
Finding nice accommodations that allow out-side guests can be disappointing sometimes. We found a great new Hotel, “Apart Hotel, Plaza Sosua” that has a pool, bar, restaurant full, A/C, kitchen (with fridge), huge rooms and all for under $40.00. Friendly front desk and give them a try -- (809) 571-3335. Across the street is a bonus, the new Plaza Sosua where girls hang out in outside bars (ala a Thai beer-bar). They are there at all times waiting for you, but the real lookers are in the discos!!
Observation ...
Besides the lack of activity in Sosua, we noticed a change of women. 75% of the women we meet were Haitians. Yes, they are very black and have different facial features than Dominicans and some only speak French but some are also stunningly beautiful (and sexy). If you like your cafe dark, your going to be a happy camper!
New ...
There are now daily flights to the local airport in Santo Domingo (not the international) and Casa de Campo from Puerta Plata airport. Remember, it is only two minutes from Puerta Plata airport to Sosua and 40 minutes to Puerta Plata. Saves a long five hour bus ride to the capital -- check a local travel agent for prices and deals.
Posted by Me on January 20, 1997 at 09:39:02:
Just back from Sosua, Dominican Republic. Granted, Bruce's latest information from Sosua is dated November, 1995, and some change is to be expected, but in this case, the report needs a GENERAL UPDATE, particularly on the subject of where to find female companionship, which is a subject near and dear to the hearts of all of us.
First, the corner of Clisante (the main street) and Rosen is OUT. Some of the local hotel owners got together and decided (rightly, in my opinion), that the aggressive girls located at that particular corner constituted a hazard to the tourist trade. Some instances of girls tag-teaming prospective customers, i.e., one grabbed between his legs and the other grabbed for his WALLET, were reported to me as the justification for this action.
So, the scene has moved into the bars, most notably OXY (actually, OXY-squared, with a superscript 2, which my browser cannot duplicate. But most people just call it Oxy, and this is how you can tell it to a motoconcho driver, who will know exactly where you want to go. Don't give these motoconcho drivers more than 10 Dominican pesos for a trip anywhere in town.
The girls in Oxy are all 18-plus, most by a good number of years. I have been warned against the Haitian girls, most of whom have very dark, almost blue-black, skin. A hotel owner to whom I spoke said his clients have had extremely bad luck with these girls, some of whom stole from his customers. Decide for yourself, but I didn't risk it. That's okay; there are plenty of Dominicanas available, and I find them more attractive anyway.
Please note that the next statement is not made with any amount of prejudice in mind, especially since I am posting on Martin Luther King Day, but if girls with a significant amount of African blood are not your cup of tea, I would stay away from Sosua and probably the DR in general. But if this doesn't bother you in the least, you will find yourself in heaven.
The Oxy girls will try to overcharge you, as girls everywhere in the world (except in Cambodia and Angeles, where they don't set the prices) will. One that I took out started at an amazing 2,000 pesos (about $160 US) for all night. This girl clearly didn't want to go all night! But I talked her down to 500 pesos for 2 hours. Much more reasonable.
Other spots for potential pickups in Sosua include Flamingos,
a topless bar a little ways down Clisante from the center of town, and another disco
which is very close to Sosua-By-The-Sea and Casa Marina, which I believe is called
Copacabana.
I didn't make it there, but I did see Flamingo, and though the girls there were pretty,
it was my impression that they, like girls in topless bars everywhere, would be more
expensive than the local freelancers. All of the bars that Bruce mentions in his
report (Moby Dick's, etc.) are CLOSED.
One's roof even fell in. The lone remnant of the scene he described is two girls who tried to molest me as I walked down the street, and from the looks of them, they would have to pay ME to spend the night. A final inaccuracy: the hotel that permits you to bring all-night guests is J.J.'s, not J.R.'s. J.J. is an American, and as long as guests are discreet, there is no problem with bringing in a girl for the night.
The one drawback to J.J.'s is that no motoconcho driver in Sosua seems to know where the place is. Not a problem. Just tell them it is "proximo Woody's" (another hotel), and you will find your way without any problems. I highly recommend J.J.'s, although be forewarned that the proprietor will talk your ear off. This is an experience which I actually enjoyed, as I was travelling solo. His relationship with his help reminds one of the BBC-PBS series Fawlty Towers, and this is a constant source of amusement.
But he has hot water, air conditioning, and a room with a TV as well as enough reading material to see even an avid reader through until the millennium. And all this for $25 a night (some rooms slightly higher). If you're not lucky enough to get the room with the TV (he only has six rooms), he will let you watch the one he has in his "lobby" (I put it in quotes because it is open air.) All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed Sosua, though not for traditional, single- male reasons. It really is much like the French Riviera, and the international crowd is a refreshing change from some places I have been.
Sosua, DR: Hotels!!
8/7/97
Thanks for the update on JJ Auberg's, Ray. I stayed at the SosuaSol in December and greatly enjoyed it. A few dropped by the outdoor bar in late afternoon. I had a brand new bungalow -- first class. It had a small kitchen, but on vacation I prefer not to bother. However, the fridge was good to have.
I think I was the first person to stay in that bungalow -- they were building several new ones. The older units were located by the pool, under trees. If I remember correctly, the bungalow had no a/c, just ceiling fans. That was fine in December, but I've been in the DR several times this summer and it is HOT! The phone is 1-809-571-2334 and the fax is 1-809-571-2416. The Sosua Sol is near La Playita, which is around the bend from the Sosua Beach.
It is a good walk to downtown, but close to Oxy2. If you prefer A/C or being closer to the center of town, you might try the hotel Don Andres, which allows ladies (at least it did in December). Telephone is 1-809-240-6261 and the fax is 1-809-240-6259. Enjoy the life!
