Action on Koh Samui

Well... Koh Samui is a kind of funky-style place... I mean, if you have been in Phuket, it's very different, smaller, easier, cheaper. The people and of course the girls are much more friendler and seem less business oriented. The people of Samui, the natives, are proud to call themselves ChaoSumi(people of Samui) and not Thais!!!

I have been 2 times in Phuket and 3 times in Samui. I definitely prefer the last one!. If you are a guy like me, don't like 4stars luxury hotels and conforts everywere, like "easy-life", good cheap food etc etc, that's the place!. I usually stay in the LamaiBeach, a kind of old Western village, after few days you know everything of everybody, the tourists are mainly young and smiling sportsmen involved in scuba diving and so on . The mood is very informal and it's easy to meet everyone. The girls are not so pretty like in Phuket or in Pattaya, you have to look around to find out some really beautyful doll, but generally they are friendlier and cheaper (don't ask too much, barfine is about 150b but it's easy to arrange it, the price is 500b a night, but if they like you there is no problem to stay together longer with just few dollars more).

I usually stay at the Weekender Resort, at the beginning of Lamai Beach road, 2 minutes from the bars but very quiet, have bungalows on the beach, a main building with rooms, a good small but clean pool, safety boxes, the last time i was there i payed 800b x day but it was low season, i think it now should be around 1100b. The best place to stay in Lamai is the Pavillion Resort, 100mt far from Weekender, for 2000b a day but there are a lot of cheaper and still good accomodation (one time i spend few night in a 5$ bungalow just on the beach!..very HippyStyle!!). Everything is in a walking distance. Chaweng Beach is much more classy and the mood is different, luxurious resort, the age of the tourist is older and in general its just a little bit much more similar to Phuket Patong Beach. The bars are just the same like the others in Thailand, here the drinks are cheaper and some girls are younger. The discos : LamaiBeach: BAHAUS DISCO (after midnight) and the MIX PUB (from 10:30pm till midnight) ChawengBeach: REGGAE PUB and GREEN MANGO. Usually the people travel from a site to the others, the trip from Lamai to Chaaweng is 10minutes by motorbike. The bars areas are just near the discos.

If you are looking for quieter place to stay : BO-PHUT Beach, a really relaxing places, no disco, no bars, few tourists. Suggestions: rent a small motorbike (120b x day), don't give them your passport, just a copy!!.

The full-moon parties are well publicized among the tourist people, thery are arranged by the locals with small boats, generally the trip is to Kho PanGan, a small island in front of Samui, not yet developed. I have been there one time and it has been funny (i made a lot of friends... and girlfriend of course!!..), some others describe their experience like some kind of orgy but mine has been a normal good and happy party!!!

You can reach Samui from BKK by Bus (forget it !!!), by train (never tryied it so i don't know!!) or by plane (cheap fare and 5 flights a day, 1 hour long). Spend a lot of time travelling around the island, you'll find some enchanting places and some very nice people.

Go to "Charlie's Hut" in Chaweng beach on Samui island. You'll pay between 120 and 150 baht a day for a nice hut and less than half that for scrumptous food. The atmosphere is laid back and you have the choice to be picky or not about food with only your sense of wanting to go local, not price, as a limitation. You're close enough to Malasia both to experience the best of Southern Thailand and to make the two or three visa runs your visit will require. Have fun.
