In Response To: Grand President current rates?? (Tomshark)

I was cleaning my hard drive, and stumbled across this Feb 2000 TSM post of Ronaldo on GP Y2K rates (unfortunately it is too old to show up on a TSM Destination Board search):

In Response To: Y2K rates for the GP? (Your Connoisseur)

I recently received this response from Anne re my inquiry for the new rates for 2000.

TSM still got 20% discount on our rack rates of year 2000.

Garden Suite - kitchenette:

I stayed in the Grand President in April

In Response To: Grand President current rates?? (Tomshark)

I spent 4 nights in the Grand President. Two days before I arrived in BKK I phoned Anne, identified myself as a TSM member, and asked for the 10% discount on a Topaz studio, for one person. Anne confirmed over the phone the room at 1200 baht/night (no breakfast).

I've read of others getting a Topaz studio for 1200 baht/night WITH breakfast, but Anne made it clear her offer did NOT include breakfast, ... perhaps I should have tried bargaining with Anne?

When I arrived two days later, the Grand President was pretty much full, and no Topaz Studio was available!! My Thai girlfriend was with me, so it was clear to Grand President staff I was looking for a room for two (as opposed to the room for one person that I had booked). But since Anne had promised me a room, the assistant front office manager (Malinee Yenjit) offered me a Garden Suite in Tower-2 for 1340 baht per night (for 4 nights), which I quickly agreed to (the Topaz studios were booked solid). A fabulous suite, and a great price for a suite. The 1340 included the 7% VAT.

I had two minor complaints about the suite: Neither of the two TVs (nor the VCR) had a video-input for my digital camera, nor did the TVs have a button to permit me to switch Star Sports from Thai to English. I ended up watching/listening to the Formula-One race in Thai. ... And I never did figure out how to properly control the air conditioner temperature. The Air Conditioner controls seems to be a consistent problem with most GP rooms. Fortunately it was not hot in BKK, (and the "hallway" was cooled to very cool temperatures), so we just turned off the air conditioner most of the time.

From my room one could see the swimming pool for Tower-1 (of the GP) [image below]. I believe each Tower has its own pool.

In Response To: I stayed in the Grand President in April (void)

Further to my last post (above), here is an image I took of the Suite I stayed in the Grand President (tower-2).

I don't have a wide angle lens with my Canon S-10, so I took a number of shots, and "stitched" them together. I'm still rather new at taking the shots, and new at stitching them together, so the "microwave" got a little warped in the process. I think I moved a bit, and introduced a parallex error. The original stitched image was massive in size, so I used Adobe PhotoShop 5.5's web save option to reduce the image to a reasonable file size (along with a significant loss in image quality).

The room rate of 1340 Baht I got was very unusual. Normally these suites go for over double this price. I think the 1340 Baht rate was given to me only because Anne had earlier guaranteed me (verbally) a Topaz studio (and they were full when I checked in). I believe the GP Hotel staff did check with Anne and she verified my story/verbal guarantee before they gave me the room for 4 nights.
